Welcome to the Youngs of Scotland
Welcome to the Youngs of Scotland
Originally owned by J Telfar Dunbar and bought by the Scottish Tartans Society in 1966. This was a blanket spun, dyed and woven by a Christina Young and the date (1726) was stitched into the edge of the blanket with her initials (CY). This tartan forms the basis of the modern (1992) Young tartan. Originally preserved at the Scottish Tartans Society Museum, the Christina Young arisaid is one of the oldest and most completely preserved specimens of homespun handlooming.
This is Douglas tartan with motif of Christina Young's arisaidh plaid (STR #4799) of 1726 superimposed on blue. Designed by Derek Young, Benderloch, Oban, 1992. The blue and green background colours are normally woven at twice the width shown here for a kilt tartan. The design retains the unusual purple - yellow - orange box check of the original blanket and changes only the ground colour to the traditional West Coast greens and blues.
With the creation of the Young Weathered Tartan, this has become known as the Young Modern Tartan, but in The Scottish Register of Tartans it is simply known as "Young".
Derek produced the Weathered Young tartan, which keeps the Douglas set, but changes the base colours completely as not to be mistaken for the Douglas tartan or the weathered Douglas tartan. The Weathered Young Tartan however, does not show up in the registry of tartans since only the colours were changed and not the set. When you look at the registration of all Young tartans, and there are many, only the original, now referred to as the modern, tartan appears. Variations of colour however, do not change the registration, just the set or pattern.
